Disaster Bulletin No. 7638Z

TO: CHURCH WORLD SERVICE CONSTITUENCY

FROM: Lawrence Turnipseed (signed 09-22-95)

RE: Southwest Florida Flooding

          $80,000 Appeal

SITUATION: Hundreds of lower-income families who

depend on farm work for their livelihoods are without

jobs and housing in Southwest Florida due to flooding

from heavy rains that have occurred since mid-August.

A community consortium spearheaded by the National Farm

Worker Ministry, a CWS partner, and churches has begun

responding to their needs. CWS is issuing this appeal

within the context of this program. (Ref. CWS Alert

dated 09-14-95.)

*******************************************************

*******************************************************

The rains, which started with Tropical Storm Jerry and

have continued as result of other tropical storm and

hurricane systems in the South Atlantic and Caribbean,

may have affected as many at 1,200 to 1,400 families in

the Bonita Springs/Fort Myers area.

Many of them have been living in shelters for close to

a month. Other homeless families are living with

relatives and friends.

Because of flooded fields, affected farmworkers find

jobs to be scarce. Many of the homeless - particularly

those who are unable to speak English -- do not know

how to apply for assistance to which they are entitled.

NEEDS: Funds for:

- Family assistance - shelter, utilities, clothes,

food, household goods

- Disaster preparedness & response training in the

farmworker community

*******************************************************

*******************************************************

A response to needs in Southwest Florida has evolved

out of an assessment conducted by the Farmworker

Association of Florida (FAF), Christian Disaster

Response (CDR) -- a ministry of the American

Evangelical Christian Church, and the National Farm

Worker Ministry (NFWM) -- a CWS partner.

The response will be implemented by a consortium of

people from the community, churches, and farm labor

organized by NFWM, CDR, and FAF. It calls for $60,000

in direct assistance to families ($500 grants); $10,000

for training people in the farmworker community in

disaster-related case assessment, aid eligibility

regulations, and assistance delivery; and $10,000 for

on-site program administration.

Organizers envision the consortium to continue working

in disaster preparation and mitigation following the

current response.
